| some articles (expand) Christmas Guest Stars Revealed! 12th Jul 2010 It's been confirmed that the BAFTA-winning Sir Michael Gambon and Welsh star Katherine Jenkins are playing major roles in the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas Special. The adventure will star Matt Smith as the Doctor, alongside Karen Gillan as Amy and Arthur Darvill as Rory. They'll be joined by, amongst others, Michael Gambon, one of the industry's most respected actors who has starred in TV classics such as The Singing Detective and Longitude as well as Academy Award-winning films including Gosford Park and Sleepy Hollow. She's currently best known as a mezzo-soprano and is one of the world's most successful classical singers. 'I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special!' Katherine said. 'I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever!' We'll be bringing you the latest news about the special over the weeks and months ahead. Dr Who Xmas Speshdgolder | News | 12/07/2010 09:44am No Comments 2010 special starts filming. Michael Gambon and Katherine Jenkins to guest star in a story that’s a Doctor Who twist on A Christmas Carol
This year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special will be a twist on Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, according the official BBC Press release: “Production started today on the 2010 Doctor Who BBC One Christmas Special in which the thrilling adventures of the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and newlyweds Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will continue in a fun-filled and heartfelt festive story. “In the grand tradition of Doctor Who Christmas specials, this year the show has once again attracted stellar guest stars as veteran actor Michael Gambon (Harry Potter, The Singing Detective) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins, in her first acting role, join the Time Lord for what might be his most Christmassy adventure yet! “Arriving on set for her first day of filming, Katherine Jenkins said: ‘I’m over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas Special – I can’t quite believe it as it’s a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. But I’m fairly sure they did it ironically.’ “The Christmas special follows on from Matt Smith’s first series as The Doctor, which attracted huge critical acclaim for Smith, his companion Gillan and lead writer Moffat, from press and legions of fans alike. “Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning said: ‘Matt Smith and Karen Gillan captivated audiences in their debut series and Doctor Who’s clever twist on the much loved A Christmas Carol will thrill BBC One viewers this year with special guest stars Sir Michael Gambon and singing sensation Katherine Jenkins joining Amy and the Doctor for an unforgettable present!’ “The series was co-commissioned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning for BBC One and Jay Hunt, Controller of BBC One. Classical singer Katherine Jenkins is to star in the Doctor Who Christmas special Classical singer Katherine Jenkins is following in the footsteps of Kylie Minogue by starring in a Doctor Who Christmas special. The Welsh vocalist will feature alongside veteran actor Michael Gambon in this year's special episode. Producers are promising a special twist on the much-loved A Christmas Carol theme. Executive producer Steven Moffat described it as "all your favourite Christmas movies at once". The precedent was set in the 2007 Doctor Who Christmas special when pop star Minogue had a starring role. Harry Potter star Michael Gambon will also take a starring role It is a first acting role for Jenkins, 30, from Neath, who will be able to benefit from the vast experience of Gambon - best known for his role as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies. Speaking about the role, Jenkins said: "I'm over the moon to be involved in the Doctor Who Christmas special. "I can't quite believe it as it's a part of the family tradition at the Jenkins household. "I heard the news that I got the role on my 30th birthday and it was the best birthday present ever." Mr Moffat said the team were fired up for the episode. He said: "We're going for broke with this one. It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. The stars will join Matt Smith as The Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amy "I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. I was laughing madly as I typed along to Christmas songs in April." The hour-long show will join Doctor's assistant Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and new husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) as they venture off on their honeymoon. But being Doctor Who, the holiday is unlikely to proceed as planned. Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC drama commissioning, said the collaboration between the team, Jenkins and Gambon would be an "unforgettable present".
